How to Pick a Bike for a Child

It can feel tricky picking the right bike for a child. How do you find the right fit? What should you look for?

First, you need to understand how kid bikes are sized. Kid bikes are categorized by the size of their tire/wheel size. This is different from adult bike sizes which are usually measured by the size of the bicycle frame. The most common wheel sizes for kids bikes are 12”, 14”, 16”, 18”, 20”, 24”, and 26”.

The best way to get the right size bike for your child is measuring their inseam. Most bike companies will share the applicable inseam length for their bikes. (The chart below gives general guidelines on bike sizes. Check with the bike manufacturer to verify their inseam recommendation.)

Once you’ve found the right bike size, it’s best to have your child try out the bike in person. Check out the fit. Your child should be able to straddle the bike with both feet flat on the ground without their body touching the top bar of the bike. Your child should also be able to reach the handle bars comfortably, with a slight bend in their arms. Then check their seat height. Your child should be able to sit comfortably and easily see their surroundings. Additionally, their legs should be slightly bent at the bottom of the pedaling.

Once you have the perfect bike, don’t forget to buy a helmet. Then get your child outside and enjoy the ride.
